“We provide the complete range of services - supporting every other department in the firm as well as generating our own pure business. So projects vary enormously and at any given time, we could be involved in anything from M&A to real estate, finance to litigation. It means the work is really diverse and exciting; and because the firm is strong in all areas, it's also top-quality across the board.
“In nearly everything Linklaters does, tax is involved – and we're working on some of the hottest topics around. That means that lawyers here don't just do the same kind of work, it's incredibly mixed and constantly changing. And we don't have the same kind of lawyers, they are multi-disciplined. People, of course, do specialise; but unlike other firms, we do not divide people up into corporate or finance teams. We spread our workload, provide variety and remain flexible. It makes for a better learning experience and it makes for a better all-round lawyer. If you also consider our excellence in areas such as Finance, M&A, litigation and private equity, it means that all the best work comes your way.
“The department is also a nice size. With about 13 partners, 35 associates and 7 trainees, we all know each other. Any associate can work for any partner, which adds to the variety. We also provide pairing partners with whom associates can discuss their development. Although the hours can be long, we are more flexible than most. With 17-month old twins myself, I’ve been able to work from home a lot more and that's been a real benefit.
“We're not just another tax practice – and that's why I've been here for 13 years. I could easily have moved. For example, at four years' pqe, I was offered a job at a large investment bank. I turned it down because I wouldn't have had the variety of work or black letter law which I enjoy here.”
