In New York, our commitment to the community is exceptional. We use the strengths of individual attorneys and staff members to bring about positive changes in our city. We currently work with the premier international and domestic organizations, including:
- Human Rights First
- Lawyers Alliance for New York
- New York Lawyers for the Public Interest
- Office of the Appellate Defender
- Sanctuary for Families
- Southern District of New York, Criminal Justice Act Panel
- Urban Justice Center
- Lambda Legal
Our attorneys have worked on a wide range of matters, including working with the New York City Corporation Counsel's office to represent the City of New York in civil matters, representing asylum seekers, appealing criminal sentences in New York state court, enabling small businesses to incorporate, and mentoring high school students.
As our New York office grows, so does our commitment to the local community. We would like to provide more of our neighbors access to justice so they have adequate representation on death row, win asylum to escape persecution, or gain custody of their children abused by a former spouse. We would also like to devote more of our time and resources to programs that increase a breast cancer victim's chances of survival, build a home for a single mother and her daughters, or teach a first grader how to read.
In addition to general pro bono matters, our attorneys work in the following areas:
- asylum refugees
- constitutional issues
- special education cases
- public international law
Pro bono work and our summer associates
The commitment of our partners and associates is equalled by our summer associates, whose drive to use their newly acquired legal skills to help others has proven very rewarding. Every summer associate has an opportunity to work on a pro bono case. Pro bono work performed by the 2008 summer class ranged from assisting on a political asylum case to representing victims of domestic abuse in family court.
