I started at Linklaters Shanghai as an intern in my second year of a law degree at Fudan University. After graduating, I became a Trainee and I’ve now been with the firm for more than 10 years, in different offices and practice groups. I also spent a year in the US for an LLM programme and subsequently passed the New York bar. I’m now a Managing Associate in the Shanghai office, focusing on corporate, M&A and financial regulation work.

I would say there are three key factors that set us apart from other firms. Firstly, we have a top-notch team of talented people who share the same values and goals. The great determination, energy and team spirit are obvious. And it’s a true pleasure working with my colleagues every day, despite the challenging work we do. Second, no matter how many jurisdictions a transaction may involve, Linklaters’ global network enables offices to work as one single team. And the third factor is our pursuit of excellence: we never settle for less.

What I like most is there is always something new to do: it’s never boring. We’re encouraged to explore the unknown, and in that process, to discover how to get the best from ourselves. As a Managing Associate, there are two main areas of influence. As the lead Associate on the transactions, I deliver the best service to clients by being a trusted advisor and promoting the firm’s brand. As a more senior member of the team, my other role is to look after and train junior Associates.

My advice is to be very cautious when deciding where to start your career. Make sure you’re joining a firm where you can make the most of your potential, and also somewhere that you’ll be surrounded by people you enjoy working with – people that can help you grow. Linklaters, I’m pleased to say, is that place.
