While studying, I completed a Summer Vacation Scheme at Linklaters. I then secured a Training Contract and qualified with the Environment, Social and Governance team.

From day one, I was amazed by the effort that goes into training Linklaters’ people. From sessions to courses and webinars, it’s all on offer.

Each day, I can be advising on the full gambit of ESG issues, from climate change to human rights, across a wide range of contexts. But as part of a highly-knowledgeable, close-knit team, the challenges are more manageable.

The main impact of my role is in the advice I give to clients. This includes advising them on climate change risks; showing them how to transition to a more sustainable economy; and helping them with human rights governance. In terms of developing client relationships, it’s less daunting than you may think. I find it’s about taking time to engage with them in the small ways, whether you send an interesting article or write a short blog post you know they’ll find interesting.

As for Linklaters’ people, they couldn’t be better – always working hard, yet willing to spare their time. And they like to enjoy themselves too, whether it’s being part of one of our many sports teams, other societies – or even a department bake-off!

For anyone thinking of a career in law there are two words I would emphasise: enthusiasm and attitude. The hours can be long, so it helps to be interested in what you’re doing. But having a proactive attitude to work will always help stand you in good stead.
